Who the hell is Alfredo Simon?

That's probably the question you've been asking as you've checked out the Birds box scores over past week or so. Simon and his surgically repaired elbow have given stability to the O's bullpen. It may not always be pretty, or efficient, but so far it has been effective to the tune of 5 saves in 5 chances.

You may not remember, but Simon first appeared for the Orioles in September of 2008 after posting a 7-2 record and 2.67 ERA for Monterey of the Mexican League. Prior to the 2008 season Simon bounced between the Phillies, Giants and Rangers organizations. He was a big hard thrower who dominated the low minors but struggled after reaching AA and AAA ball. Simon's command improved greatly in the Mexican League as he posted a 1.06 WHIP in 81 innings. After missing nearly all of 2009 recovering from Tommy John surgery Simon has provided Dave Trembley with a reliable late inning power arm who isn't afraid to go right after hitters. It's interesting to note that Simon does have previous experience as a closer after saving 19 games in 2005 for the Norwich Navigators.
